COED VARSITY WRESTLING VS. KAREN FOLEY MEMORIAL

Date Posted: Jan 02, 2010
Game Date: Jan 02, 2010

Results from the Karen Foley Memorial Tournament at St.Patrick's/St.Vincent's High School in Vallejo.

The Pirates roster for this tournament saw action from Alanna Hamilton, John Zerbe, Dash Stander, Matt Makohin, Thomas Gazzoli and Thomas Pedersen. The weight brackets were pooled meaning, they grouped kids of similar weight in the brackets as opposed to making them all weight a respective weight class. Each Drake Pirate Wrestler had strong results.

Alanna Hamilton wrestled tough in her two matches. She continued to gain valuable mat time, even though the results weren't fabulous. in her second year, I continue to see improvements in Alanna's wrestling.

Matt Makohin lost his opening match to a tough opponent from the strong Rodriguez HS team, but came back strong in his second match. He put forth a competitive effort battling all the way through the match coming up just short, but wrestling all three periods.

Thomas Pedersen continues to make the adjustment to the heavyweight class. He wrestled some fairly experienced opponents. I was pleased with his effort and see a great deal of potential in Thomas, simply from his work ethic and how he continues to wrestle hard in all of his matches!

John Zerbe overcame an early set back and battled his way to a THIRD PLACE finish. His place wining match was a fabulous victory as he wrestled very smart and limited his opponent to a couple of takedowns and an escape and holding onto the victory. A great effort by John!

Dash Stander also overcame an early setback and battled his way to a THIRD PLACE. He too wrestled a tough place winning match holding off his opponent with some great mat awareness. Another strong effort!

Thomas Gazzoli continues to wrestle strong and secured himself a SECOND PLACE. Though he didn't achieve the results he desired in the finals match, he continues to wrestle with a game-plan and follows that game plan, thus leading him to strong wins. A very well wrestled tournament by Thomas!

Above all, I received an extraordinary compliment by the St.Pat's/St.Vincent's Tournament Director, that that the Drake Wrestling team showed extraordinary sportsmanship! One of the most profound compliments I have received! Thank you Pirates for exhibiting these traits! Keep working hard!
