JV Girls Soccer move into first with a big WIN OVER MC!
If games were decided by the stats, MC had this one in the bag: they out shot us twelve to four; they had seven corner kicks to our one; seven direct free kicks to our two. They beat us in all the stats except the one that matters - Goals: DRAKE 1, MC 0.
The Lady Pirates came out strong, giving as good as they got (and maybe a bit better) in the pushing and shoving against the always physical MC squad, with Drake getting called for 4 fouls in the first 10 minutes. Two of those fouls were called against Captain VIC (who seems to be developing a fondness for making a point on a level a bit beyond what the Refs find acceptable (but what the heck -she's a captain!) With PAULA coming off an illness, freshman MACKENZIE got the start at right forward and held her slot and did her part in pushing the attack. Freshman MEGAN showed that it's not just sweetness and light and gave MC a game when she got the tap at forward.,
With a strong wind at their backs the first half. MC played the long ball to their forwards #11 and #4 who, despite everything the Drake coaching brain trust could come up with, kept slipping in behind our defense and getting off shots and wicked crosses. MC pushed hard with extra punch from big attacking runs from their fullbacks. It could easily have been 3-0 MC at the half were it not for personal best performances from our keeper, CHANDLER, who, while getting peppered by MC, cranked up her game a few clicks and got hands on everything that came her way, and from our left fullback LAUREN, who twice came out of nowhere to clear balls that were no doubt going in the net.
0 - 0 at the half. LAUREN said it all during half time: "They're beating us to the ball. Get first to the ball. We can beat these guys!"
Both teams came out hard in the second half, nobody backing down -everyone fighting for every ball. MC's #11 got a gusher of a bloody nose going after a head ball with LAUREN. While pushing the attack, JAHYA got clobbered just above her shinguard and was out for the rest of the game. ELA came in to take JAHYA'S place and was flawless, against MC's #11. Well done ELA! Captain VIC came off with a recurrence of the leg cramps, but thanks to the healing hands of Sophia's dad, got back in the game. The Ref added 2 minutes for injury time. With 10 minutes left in the game, it looked like MC had moved some players around to beef up their defense, to play for the tie. ( A tie keeps MC in First) LAUREN shifted to the right side where, walkin' the talk, she owned that piece of the world, not only shutting down the MC attack, but winning the ball and starting the counter attack, pushing the ball up into the attacking third.
Regulation time expired and it it doesn't look so good for Drake. Then the Lady Pirates work the ball into the box and EMMA gets off a shot which the MC keeper deflects and GRACE is there to pop it in the net. GRACIE on fire... With 2 seconds left in injury time, it's DRAKE 1, MC 0. Then the fat lady sings....Tears and Cheers..
With the shutout, the Drake defense, of CHANDLER, MADDIE, JAHYA, LAUREN and CHARLOTTE, remains the best in MCAL, allowing only 3 goals. Outstanding play from MADDY in the midfield, who had the MC coach worried, from EMMA, who never let up and never backed down, and KIARA fearless at right mid, calling up the old words -steadfast, dauntless, indomintable...
If you saw the game, these words do not do it justice, if you missed it, well you really missed something.
