GIRLS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP WITH UNDEFEATED DUAL MEET SEASON

Event by event the points mounted as the Drake girls made a life memory statement with  their victories over previously undefeated Redwood and a Tam team with only one loss.  Here are only a few of the highlights, in sequence from the track ---

4 x 100m relay (Nakagawa, Flowerman, Fritz, Swezy)  1st place in 51.0, 3rd quickest in Drake hisotry and the best in Marin this year

1600m   1st place with Julia Saunders upsetting two Redwood favorites with a nifty 5:26 time over four laps

100m high hurldes  1st place with Camila Flowerman running the fastest  time in the league this season, a 16.2 gem.  This moves her up on the Drake "all-time" listing for the 33 inch high hurdles

400m  Zoe Fritz ran away with the 400m in 61.2, the best time in the county for the year and one of the best Drake dual meet marks in many years

800m  Kathryn Hutchins handled the win, looking comfortable with impressive speed in 2:26

300m hurdles  Flowerman was back to win in just over 50 seconds.   The junior leads the league with a sub fifty time earlier in the year.

4 x 400m relay (Swezy, Fritz, Nakagawa, Hutchins) enjoyed their "victory" laps and won with the second best time in Marin this year.  Their 4:06 in Los Angeles is the best time for 2010.  Two veteran coaches told me it is the fastest any Marin foursome has run "for years."

Field events (results arrived in varying sequence)

throws ---  1st, 2nd with Zoe Davis leading the way and  Kaylee Weber in second.  The Drake girls have the 3 best throwers in the league.

pole vault ---  Sydney Wallach cleared 9 feet and earned second place.

triple jump ---  Lizzy Baumsteiger continued to win in the league meets and was out over 31 feet

high jump ---    Melanie Steiner went over 4 feet 10 inches to win the event. Kelsey Nimetz and Haley Conway tied for second with 4 foot 8 inch clearances

Others Drake track and field athletes contributed to these victories and the 8 and 0 final dual meet record.   The whole team showed up to compete, win the title, finish undefeated. 

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.

This is the best girls' team since the undefeated 1986 to 1989 lasses dominated the Marin County Athletic League.

Girls now 6 and 0 in league competitions

A lot of depth and some outstanding lead athletes are producing a powerful Drake track and field record for the girls this year. 

Zoe Davis has increased her school shot put record to 35 feet 6 inches. 

The girl's mile relay team ran 4:10.20 in the Stanford Invitational.

Drake is number one, two and three in the league by times over the 300 meter low hurdles. 

Three of the throwers are over 30 feet in the shot put.

Zoe Fritz ran 61.6 on April 1 with Kathryn Hutchings close in 62.4.   And sophomore Mari Nakagawa has run 62.9, giving the girls the three best times over 400 meters at this late stage of the 2010 season.

Drake varsity track and field teams win initial league meets

Drake girls show scoring power with 101 to 27 victory in early season league meet
 
Varsity boys pull one out, 70 to 61, behind strong sophomore action
 
We knew our girls were going into the season with balance and outstanding Marin county event leaders. On Thursday with puffy clouds and and some blue sky they revealed their power in a dual meet with Marin Catholic.  An outstanding track and field facility added to the sport atmosophere.
 
If one girl were to to be singled out for track excellence yesterday for Drake, my choice would be sophomore Mari Nakagawa.  Why? Twin wins in individual events with very good mark (e.g., 50.9 for 300m hurdles, 13.2 over 100 meters). 
 
Anybody else?  
 
The throwers with  Zoe Davis out to 33 feet 2 inches, Kaylee Weber to 32 feet 5 inches in the shot put, Weber winning the discus at 96 feet).
Zoe Fritz had an impressive 27.8 time and win over 200 meters, Sydney Wallach won the pole vault at 8 feet, Hayley Conway returned from "injured reserve" and led a Drake high jump sweep with a good 4 foot 8 inch clearence and Kathryn Hutchins claimed 800 meters in 2:30.6.
 
See below for more praise, recognition, please, as Baumsteiger, Weinstein claimed victories and a few new faces added to the strength of the girl's team.
 
Very impressive for the boys was the sprinting of sophomore Ross MacAusland on the the boys 4 x 100m relay team, his 100m victory and 200 meter time of 23.6, the late meet 3200 time of 10:28 by sophomore Will Baker-Robinson and the triple jump victory by sophomore Trevor Clark at 38 feet 6 inches.
 
Also impressive was the high jumping of Dakota Flick with a win at 5 feet 10 inches and the 4 x 100m relay clocking of 45.5 with Ian Musser, MacAusland, Zephyr Forest and Matt Kuhr).  Who would have thought a week ago that we would have sprinters capable of producing such a good time?  Zephyr was without competition in the Marin Catholic-less hurdles, but his 16.9 clocking in the high sticks will be one of the better marks in Marin for awhile. Johnny Lawson had a class freshman time over 1600 meters, a 4:54.1, while another freshman, Clayton Hutchins, was just under 5 minutes for his first of many, many sub-five minute miles.
 
Carrol Olivers victory in the 800 meters in 2:08.3 was "ho-hum," but the second place points produced by Darby Radley figured significantly in the Drake victory.  And his 2:11.2 clocking is promising for our half mile stable. 
 
Back to the girls,  Camela Flowerman, who won the Marin Catholic - less high hurdles, ran the longer sticks with a 52.8 clocking, Lizzy Baumsteiger handled a sore groin and won the triple jump at 30 feet 7 inches, Mika Weinstein had a nice 15 foot long jump to win, Melanie Stoner and Eve Diebel cleared 4 feet 6 inches in the high jump to complete a sweep in the event, Julia Saunders and freshman Summer Lawson brought forth distance points behind state level performances by a Marin Catholic girl in a dual meet (e.g., 5:12 and 10:58 for the mile and two mile).  Do you realize how exceptional this was?  I could say, simply "divine."
 
There is more to say, people to praise, thank, recognize.  All of the varsity marks will be posted on Saturday morning at our 8:30 a.m. practice.  Remember the parent meeting at 9:30 a.m., please.  As of this write-up, no JV boy results on my screen yet. 
 
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to our victories.  Next week we go to Los Gatos for an invitational, then the following week some tough meets will face us at Novato.  Terra Linda will join that party.  Expect considerable intensity.

Drake off to strong start in track & field 

 

"All comer" events held on 2/27/10 at Drake for county high school athletes

 

Kathryn Hutchins (600m), Sophia Tolbert (high jump), Kaylee Weber (shot), Lizzy  Baumsteiger (triple jump), Camila Flowerman (200m low hurdles, Zephyr Forest (high hurdles, intermediate hurdles), Dakota Flick (high jump) and 8 x 200m relay (Zoe, Zephyr, Camila, Terry, Camille, Dameon, Mari, Ross) lead all county entries in their events 

 

Second best impressive, too ---  Carroll Oliver (600m), Zoe Fritz (100m), Ross MacAusland (300m), Sydney Wallach (high hurdles), Mari Nakagawa (300m), Summer Lawson (1500m); Jake Sandler (triple jump), Emma Woodwright and Mika Weinstein (long jump) 

 

Special mention ---  Lauren Silver, new to middle distance running, came home with the 3rd best 600m time, a good 1:54.5 mark;  wow;  Lindsay Rogers, who just swam over to the track from the pool, handled 1500m with the 4th best time, a 4:43.4 metric mile;  Ross MacAusland closed fast in the 100 meters, running 11.5 for the 3rd best time of the day;  Carson Schilling ran 11.8 and moves into the Drake sprint picture;  MacAusland ran 39.1 for the second quickest 300m of the day, but the timers missed that one;  also, Matt Kuhr looked fast winning his heat, but is not listed on the result sheet 

 

We will compliment and praise others when we greet each other later today. The Marin Catholic league meet is Thursday, it is for keeps.

 

Impressive new blood --  Barbara Moretto (long hurdles), Aliki Terry (300m in 40.3), Molly Carmedy (100m in 14.2), Johnny Lawson (1500m) and Clayton Hutchins (3000m) and others.  Respect for everyone who risked themselves, raced or leaped or threw themselves into the 2010 track and field season.

Drake girls record very good early season marks ---
 
Zoe Davis reached 33 feet 7 inches in shot put; it is the second best toss by a Drake girl in the school's history; Zoe has the farthest, just an inch away
 
Freshman girl, Sophia Tolbert, wins high jump at 4 feet 8 inches, reveals outstanding middle distance potential
 
Camila Flowerman and Mari Nakagawa run the 300m low hurdles in 51 seconds, most promising season ahead; Flowerman looks dangerous in high hurdles
 
Sidney Wallach cleared 8 feet in the pole vault to win her prime event
 
Julia Summers was just nipped at the finish in the 1600 meters, finishing with a good early season 5:46 clocking
 
Girls 4 x 100m relay team runs 52.10 with Zoe Fritz, Flowerman, Camille Swezy and Nakagama creating the good early season time
 
Kathyrn Hutchings came from thirty or more yards back to anchor the mile relay team to victory, was clocked in 61.9 ish; in the 800 meters  the senior put a 2:34 time in the books
 
OTHER NOTES OF NOTE
 
Eve Diebel and Melanie Stoner clear 4 feet 6 inches in the high jump, Lizzy Baumsteiger was out to 32 feet 9 inches in the triple jump, while Kaylee Weber had a good throwing double of 30 feet in the shot put, 79 feet in the discus. Camille Swezy graced her way to a 65.0 clocking over 400 meters
 
Many, many new girls "let fly" and didn't hesitate to take on the new with flare 
 
Respect for those new girls who went out and competed, took on the challenge, the risk.  A Shauna, Barbara, Molly, Lauren, Olivia and others raced into the 2010 track picture with honor.

We lost too much fire power with the graduation of five outstanding North Coast Section track and field athletes from last year's team to be a favorite in the league.  But the arrival of some new lads is making Drake look more competitive at this stage in the new season. 
 
Carrol Oliver showed exciting speed and strength with a 52 second anchor leg in the mile relay
 
Kamran Rathod and Dakota Flick jumped 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 6 to finish 1, 2 in the high jump
 
Zephyr Forest recorded a 16.9 high hurdle time, then was under 44 seconds in the long hurdles for his "best ever" early season time
 
Nick Massucco, a sophomore,  brings hope to throws with 93 foot toss in the discus
 
Darby, Akili, and Dameon break 60 over 400 meters with Darby leading the way with a 57 clocking
 
Johnny Lawson battled his way to a 10:43 mile, teammates Clayton Hutchins and Dylan Enos look ready to drop below 5 minutes in the mile
 
Powerful Ross MacAusland closed fast in the 100 meters, Matt Kurr looked quick in his 100 meter heat
 
Respect for each of you who risked, gave yourself a chance to excel in the sport.  As an old teammate of mine use to put it, "money in the bank."
